On November 5, 1896 a group of 45 people met to establish a Polish parish on Staten Island. They elected officers and formed a committee to present their appeal to the Archbishop of New York, Michael Augustine Corrigan. Among the group of 45 was Mr. Stanislaus Jakubowski who was elected President of the committee. Descendants of Mr. Jakubowski still attend Sunday Mass at St Adalbert Church today.
After several years and meetings Elm Park was selected as the location for St. Adalbert Parish. Fr. Michael Slupek was appointed as the first residential pastor and celebrated his first Liturgy for the parishioners of St. Adalbert on October 20, 1901. Under Fr. Slupek’s leadership the cornerstone on the original wood structure was laid on December 29, 1901. The budget for the construction was $903.
A little over a year later, Fr. Joseph Brzoziewski was appointed the new pastor of St Adalbert parish. Fr. Brzoziewski would not only oversee the completion of the Church on May 03, 1903 but remain in dedicated service to St. Adalbert Parish until his passing 63 years later.
In 1905 St Adalbert opened its parochial school in the basement of the church. It was staffed by the Felician Sisters.
After ten years a larger church was needed to meet the needs of the growing the number of parishioners and school students. On November 13, 1921 a larger church was dedicated on Morningstar Road. By 1961, the school had grown so large it was moved from the church basement to a separate building on the property.
In March 1965, Monsignor John S. Felczak was appointed pastor. By this time, the church building was deteriorating so Mass was moved to the school auditorium. The current Church building on St. Adalbert Place was dedicated on December 08, 1968 by the Most Reverend Terrance Cooke, Archbishop of New York.
Fr. Alexander Horembala became the fourth pastor of St Adalberts in 1974. He saw that the pastoral needs were met with the help of Fr. John Starzec, Fr. Stephen Lonek , Fr. Michael Cichon and Deacon Joseph Rentkowski. Deacon Rentkowski was a devoted servant to the parish for many years until moving on to St. Anthony of Padua parish on Staten Island.
In 1992 Fr. John Hynes became the pastor of St. Adalbert Church. Fr. Eugene Carrella became pastor of St. Adalberts in 1998. Fr. Eugene had a great reverence for the saints. He organized memorable and spiritually enriching Feast Day celebrations for Our Lady of Mount Carmel and St. Padre Pio. Fr. Carrella served the parish as pastor for 16 years. Also joining the pastoral staff in November 2013 was Fr. Abraham Berko.
In July 2014, Fr. James Garisto was named temporary administrator of St. Adalbert Church. He arrived to the parish during the Archdiocese of New York’s parish realignment program called Making All Things New. Under Making All Things New, St Adalbert Church would be merged with nearby St. Roch Church.
On August 01, 2015, Fr. Garisto became the pastor of the newly merged St. Adalbert – St. Roch Parish. In late November 2015, Fr. Abraham took the helm of the merging parish as the temporary administrator. On July 01, 2016 Fr. Albin Roby became the Administrator of St. Adalbert – St. Roch Parish. Fr. Diego Hernandez currently serves the parish as our Parochial Vicar.
Today, there is still a significant number of Polish American families attending St. Adalbert Church. Mass is now celebrated in English and the majority of our parishioners reflect the mixed ethnicity of Staten Island’s North Shore. The Felician Sisters no longer have a presence in the parish but our school continues to meet the educational and spiritual needs of its students.
